If you are looking for a fine recording of songs by Duke Ellington
sung by a fine jazz vocalist, then the release of the CD collection
titled We Speak Duke will fill the bill completely! This is jazz
vocals in the grand tradition of flawless singing and musical performances,
filled with verve and style, and excellent production values. With
the directness and beauty of this CD collection, it should be up
for some awards.
Linda Tate has the perfect jazz voice. She is a singer’s
singer.
Accompanying Linda Tate are some fine musicians. Bradley Williams
on piano, Doug Scharf on trumpet, gifted vocalist Joanie Pallatto
singing with Linda Tate on the song “In A Mellow Tone,” and
many other artists whose input into this outstanding collection
make it a winner in all ways.
There are sixteen songs in the collection. Here is a sampling
of some of the Ellington songs: “Love You Madly,” “I
Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart,” “I’m Just A Lucky
So and So,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Cotton
Tail,” “Just Squeeze Me,” “In A Sentimental
Mood,” and “Daydream.”
Congratulations to Southport Records for assembling an excellent,
contemporary approach to the American Standards of composer Duke
Ellington, and placing these classic songs with the voice of Linda
Tate. We Speak Duke is one of the finest collections of Duke Ellington
music to come along in several years. We Speak Duke is a winner!
